I just got internet at my new house and not sure how to configure the router/modem(not sure which one i need to configure) so no one outside is stealing my internet(damn freeloaders!). I have two laptops and xbox 360 that use the wireless internet. Also, how do i rename the connection so i can fake the people by saying “virus” or something so if they do get on they might think twice about it. I have a Motorola modem and Netgear Router. Like i said, not sure which one of those is the key to my problem. Thanks for the help!

call netgear and tell them that you just bought this router and that you need help in setting up the security functions… they have toll free help numbers explicitly for this task… they should walk you through it… and they usually do a good job

this normally involves logging into the router’s configuration page, turning on wep/wpa encryption and specifying a security key, then setting up all wireless devices to provide the security key to the router when they connect – it should all be covered in detail in the router’s manual.
realistically, renaming the broadcast id of your router to something like ‘virus’ will make no difference to anyone – if they can see you’re unable to even secure your router are they likely to believe you’ve built an automated attack computer?

you need to configure the router with firewal software. when you use fierewall software you can configure it so “only your computers and your xbox 360″ can have accesses to the router. Or dont use a wireless router go hard wired only that will stop the freeloaders or when your not using the internet, put your modem and router on a powerstrip with surge protector and shut off the equiment.

The most secure way to configure your Netgear router is with MAC filtering. You get the MAC numbers for all your computers – from right clicking your connection – Status – Support – Details – the physical address is your MAC address. Log into your Netgear and click the MAC filtering tab – enter the MAC addresses – click apply and ok – now NO ONE will be able to use the network except your machines. For a little added fun – leave it visible – and watch to see them get frustrated trying to hack in!

go into network connections and set up wireless router. You will see a place where it will say encryption i suggest WPA because it is more secure encryption method than WEP. then you will have to make a passkey and enter it into the laptops and x-box 360. That way if someone tries to use your Internet they will need the passkey.

I have a netgear router and it is quite easy. Look on the bottom of your router. There should be something marked ‘Default Access’ with a web address.
Example http://111.111.1.1
This is how you access your routers security features. Open your web browser and type this address (not the numbers above but the numbers on your particular router) in the address box and it will allow you to login into your router just like a web site.
You can now change all settings on your network but I think if you change the security settings here, you will have to make sure each computer uses the same security settings. They will have to be configured to login with a network name and password. This will keep other computers from being able to login.

Scientists from Stanford University have released the results of a decade long study on a virus they believe to be the cause of all life on planet Earth. The virus, shown above, has scientists the world over perplexed as to how a living organism can precede life and they wonder as to its origin.

"Wherever the virus came from," said Dr. Schlagel, "we are convinced that life is viral. This might explain its persistent ability to adapt and evolve to a more and more challenging environment. It also might explain mankinds willingness to destroy the planet, to kill our host, so to speak, in order to move on to broader vistas and new challenges."
Dr. Schlagel added that further research is needed.
