same thing use to happen to me. It is a virus and very difficult to get rid of.

Answer by TheArfen
Virus, your computer is highly infected.

This method seems to be working for most people that use it.

First

click on Start > Run. Type in the following into the open box.

devmgmt.msc

then Click on OK. This will run Device Manager. In Device Manager,

click on View > Show Hidden Devices.

expand all the devices by clicking on the “Plus” sign. Now try to find

TDSSserv.sys or clbdriver.sys or oUltraf or seneka.sys,

right click on whatever one you found and select Disable.

Please make sure that you do not select the Un-Install option

otherwise infection will be back once you reboot your computer.

if none of them are there do not worry,

it could be something simpler but follow what comes next.

you will have to enable view hidden folders in folder options > view.

Delete everything in the windows temp folder,

C > Windows > Temp

Delete all cookies,

Delete all temporary internet files(not to be confused with windows temp files)

these are best deleted via your internet browsers.

it will save you messing about in the the hidden system files

reset internet explorer,

tools > internet options > Advanced tab > reset .

Delete everything in the prefetch folder.

C > Windows > Prefetch

Delete the hosts file,

C > Windows > System32 > drivers > etc > HOSTS

A clean hosts file will be written by windows when you reboot later.

Note: if you were using a custom Hosts file

you will need to replace any of those entries yourself.

Delete the flash cookies found in the macromedia, #Shared Objects folder.

c > users > “your name” > App Data > Roaming > macromedia > Flash player > #Shared Objects

delete everything you find in the #Shared Objects folder

Run a full scan with this

and remove everything suspicious it finds.

Sophos Anti-Rootkit DOWNLOAD : https://secure.sophos.com/support/cleaners/sar_15_sfx.exe

Then run a full scan with this and remove what it finds.

Super anti spyware Pro : http://www.superantispyware.com/

Super anti spyware Pro DOWNLOAD : http://downloads.superantispyware.com/downloads/SUPERAntiSpywarePro.exe

this has a tool built in that can reset the URL prefix’s

USE IT.

reset your router to default.

your redirect virus should now be gone.

download then run,

tdss killer to double check.

tdss killer : http://support.kaspersky.com/downloads/utils/tdsskiller.exe

(Do not use this first as it has been known to damage some system’s)

Answer by Shone
Sounds like your system has been hi-jacked. The virus/malware may be hard to get rid of. Assuming you have Antivirus software, get the latest updates and try a deep scan. Microsoft OneCare may also be helpful.

http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/default.htm

If additional troubleshooting is needed, you might check your Browser proxy settings to see if some unexpected URL has been added. If so, try a Google search for that domain and see if any particular HiJack source becomes evident. That may further narrow down what needs to be removed from your system

Answer by David Vandertramp
You have a virus, known as the “Search Redirect Virus”. This virus will redirect your search results from any major search engine on any of your browsers. It usually redirects to advertisements. This virus is notoriously hard to detect using conventional means.

This is all due to the way the virus infects your computer. Instead of running a harmful process or installing malicious software (malware) it manages to infect a few system files, changing the settings so that it makes the system perform its dirty work whilst it hides away from the anti virus.

The system file it infects is the one used by the operating system to handle the redirect requests. Such requests are usually made by search engines every time you click a link. This step is intercepted by the virus to take you to a nasty website made by the hackers, then on to the advertisement or other random website. This nasty website could contain other viruses, so it is important you remove the redirect virus as soon as possible.

The best way to do this is to use a program called ComboFix. This has worked well for me in the past every time I have used it. You will need a tutorial however, since it is designed for professionals. You can get a thorough tutorial here:

Don’t give them any Personal info. They are trying to steal your Identity. Go to www.cnet.com and download AVG Free Anti virus 8. It is Free, effective, and should rid your computer of that other stuff.

I use AVG on my computer,

Answer by The Phlebob
Scam. Personal Antivirus IS malware. Do not pay them or give them information.

If you have an anti-virus, make sure it has the latest virus definitions and run a scan with it in Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking. That often prevents malware from protecting itself. If you don’t have one, many people here swear by AVG (it’s free).

I suggest you also download Ad-Aware Free and Spybot S&D (they’re free), install them, update them and run them, again in Safe Mode With Networking.

Also, turn off System Restore to evict any copies of bad stuff that might be lurking there.

To get into Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking:

1.Log out and reboot your machine.

2.When the machine starts the reboot sequence, press the F8 key repeatedly.

3.Select Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking from the resulting menu.

4.Login. If the malware has changed your password, try logging in as Administrator. By default, Administrator has no password.

5.The machine will continue booting, but the Windows desktop will look different.

6.When you’re finished doing what you need to do, log out and reboot back into normal mode.

Note that even if the anti-malware programs get rid of the malware, they may not be able to reverse the effects. Search the Web for possible fixes.

Update and run everything regularly, not just when you think you already have malware.

Good luck.

Any popup that tells you that you have virus is a virus itself. Just ignore it and close it. Use Avast! or AVG as a virus scanner. They are free and do not eat up all your system’s memory while running.

Or you can try to boot the PC into Safe mode by pressing F5 at boot up, this might not load the bug,and then you can scan with anti virus and spy ware software.

If all else fails and you dont care about wiping out the info on your hard drive.geta Win 98 start up disk, but it up run fdisk and delte the Non Dos partition.

You clearly haven’t thought about this at all.

But you are absolutely right. You shouldn’t use a free product like Firefox. You should buy from the corporations that are dedicated to making money off you, like Microsoft, even if it isn’t as good. After all, why should you give those do-gooders the satisfaction of knowing that they are making a difference in the world? Why, that may give them something to feel proud about.

More generally (non-profit hospitals, universities, etc.), they are telling you that the money you do give them is all going into the product, not into the pockets of owners. All other things being equal (which they never are), that means you should be getting more value for your money.

For small non-profits, it tells you that the people doing it are doing it for the good they do, not for the financial rewards. For most people, that is something to be proud of. (And which would you rather do business with, a mechanic who loves his work or one who is just in it for the money?)

Answer by Travis
Install a real time virus scanner. A real time virus scanner constantly scans your PC including new files as you download them, making sure they have no viruses before you use them. I use McAfee, a paid program. However you can just as easily download free virus scanners. I wouldn’t say they are as reliable as one you can buy at an electronics store, but they are much better than nothing.

Try AVG http://download.cnet.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Edition/3000-2239_4-10320142.html

Avast http://download.cnet.com/Avast-Free-Antivirus/3000-2239_4-10019223.html

Changing your IP address won’t help.

Answer by Ray
Forget changing the IP adress. Get better anti-virus software. Just type in “Microsoft Anti virus programs” There should be some you can pick from, I personally like Microsoft Security Essencials its free, but it requires you to update it manually every day. and scan everything thats not lisenced before you download it.

Answer by TempoOne
You need to use good anti-virus software with real time protection (but I’m sure you already knew that) and….

You also must keep your Windows and all your installed software 100% patched and updated. An unpatched computer allows trojans, virus and malware to install itself without you doing a thing. Adobe products (Flash-Player, Acrobat, Reader) are notorious for needing constant updating to plug security vulnerabilities. Sun Java too.

I suggest that Secunia PSI to insure that all one’s software is kept always updated and patched:

You IP address has nothing to do with the issue.

Its free.

Answer by soupfine
Avoid websites, links and downloads that are risky for malware. It’s not that hard to do. Use common sense and learn how to recognize bs.

WOT is pretty good a keeping you out of risky sites.

Answer by Phantom
You can’t change your IP address unless you get a new computer.

However, anti-virus software would be very, very helpful. But, don’t use Norton 360 Anti-Virus, my desktop got a virus every month or so with that anti-virus “protection”.

Your situation sounds like someone with you on their mailing list got hacked, the most effective remedy would be to have all your friends remove you and then clear your mailing list, writing down their e-mails into a book, then run a virus scan and set up a firewall, effectively stopping viruses from entering (with the firewall), while decontaminating your computer (by scanning for and eliminating, viruses, trojans, etc.) and avoiding the bulk of the trojans (by stopping automatic senders from mailing you). I have also written a few other long-term solutons below:

A) Get antivirus software:

antivirus software also blocks trojans, many also include firewalls (which block oncoming viruses and trojans before they arrive) and anti-spyware (which detects and destroys programs that may be monitoring your computer use).

Commercially available programs are usually very efficient, while there are also effective free programs available online. AVG, for instance, is a good one, though make sure to do your research before downloading.

B) Run regular scans:

Run a complete scan your computer once a week. If you have antivirus software, simply open the program and press scan, although most programs do this automatically.

C) Be computer-wise:

Read through every e-mail completely, if something looks off, it probably is.

Don’t open attached files without confirmation. Call or text the friend (if possible) and find out if they sent it.

Don’t open unwanted mail. If it’s from somewhere you didn’t sign up for or from someone you don’t know, just delete it.

A Trojan horse, or trojan for short, is a term used to describe malware that appears, to the user, to perform a desirable function but, in fact, facilitates unauthorized access to the user’s computer system. The term comes from the Trojan Horse story in Greek mythology. Trojan horses are not self-replicating which distinguishes them from viruses and worms. Additionally, they require interaction with a hacker to fulfil their purpose. The hacker need not be the individual responsible for distributing the Trojan horse. It is possible for hackers to scan computers on a network using a port scanner in the hope of finding one with a Trojan horse installe.

Adware mean :

Adware

Adware is considered a legitmate alternative offered to consumers who do not wish to pay for software. Programs, games or utilities can be designed and distributed as freeware. Sometimes freeware blocks features and functions of the software until you pay to register it. Today we have a growing number of software developers who offer their goods as “sponsored” freeware until you pay to register. Generally most or all features of the freeware are enabled but you will be viewing sponsored advertisements while the software is being used. The advertisements usually run in a small section of the software interface or as a pop-up ad box on your desktop. When you stop running the software, the ads should disappear. This allows consumers to try the software before they buy and you always have the option of disabling the ads by purchasing a registration key.

In many cases, adware is a legitimate revenue source for companies who offer their software free to users. A perfect example of this would be the popular e-mail program, Eudora. You can choose to purchase Eudora or run the software in sponsored mode. In sponsored mode Eudora will display an ad window in the program and up to three sponsored toolbar links. Eudora adware is not malicious; it reportedly doesn’t track your habits or provide information about you to a third party. This type of adware is simply serving up random paid ads within the program. When you quit the program the ads will stop running on your system.

Spyware mean:

Unfortunately, some freeware applications which contain adware do track your surfing habits in order to serve ads related to you. When the adware becomes intrusive like this, then we move it in the spyware category and it then becomes something you should avoid for privacy and security reasons. Due to its invasive nature, spyware has really given adware a bad name as many people do not know the differences between the two, or use the the terms interchangeably.

Spyware is considered a malicious program and is similar to a Trojan Horse in that users unwittingly install the product when they install something else. A common way to become a victim of spyware is to download certain peer-to-peer file swapping products that are available today.

Spyware works like adware but is usually a separate program that is installed unknowingly when you install another freeware type program or application. Once installed, the spyware monitors user activity on the Internet and transmits that information in the background to someone else. Spyware can also gather information about e-mail addresses and even passwords and credit card numbers.

Because spyware exists as independent executable programs, they have the capability to monitor your keystrokes, scan files on the hard drive, snoop other applications, such as chat programs or word processors, install other spyware programs, read cookies, change the default home page on the Web browser, while consistently relaying this information back to the spyware author who will either use it for advertising and marketing purposes or sell the information to another party.

Licensing agreements that accompany software downloads sometimes warn the user that a spyware program will be installed along with the requested software, but the licensing agreements are not always be read completely by users because the notice of a spyware installation is often couched in obtuse, hard-to-read legal disclaimers

Combating Spyware :

While one may not realize they have installed spyware, there are some signs that it exists on your computer. If you notice any changes to your Web browser that you did not make such as extra toolbars or different homepage settings, as well as changes to your security settings and favorites list, you could have spyware running on your system. Other signs of a spyware infection include pop-up ads which aren’t related to a Web site you’re viewing; usually spyware advertisements are adult content in nature and are not displayed in the same fashion as legitimate ads you would normally see on your favorite Web sites. You may also see advertisements when you’re not browsing the Web. Clicking hyperlinks which do not work (or take you somewhere you didn’t expect), a sluggish system, or your system taking longer to load the Windows desktop are all signs that your computer may be infected with spyware.

With the onset of spyware comes a plethora of anti-spyware software packages to rid your system of these unwanted and malicious programs. Anti-spyware software works by identifying any spyware installed on your system and removing it. Since spyware is installed like any other application on your system it will leave traces of itself in the system registry and in other places on your computer. Anti-spyware software will look for evidence of these files and delete them if found.

It is important to remember that not all companies who claim their software contains adware are really offering adware. There is always a chance that adware is spyware in disguise so to speak, and that programs with embedded spyware may not state its existence at all. Always stay on the side of caution and be sure to research privacy policies and licensing agreements that come with freeware. You should also become familiar with Internet lists of companies reported to be using spyware. Much like a firewall or anti-virus program, anti-spyware software is crucial to maintain optimal protection and security on your computer and network

Spyware = any program that spies on you or your computer and reports back to a server.

Malware = any program that you don’t want on your computer that was put there without your intention (viruses, worms, spyware, trojans, etc.)

Adware = any program designed to give you ads, pop up or otherwise

Cookies = a small text file that your browser puts on your computer when you visit some sites. They are usually harmless and are used, for example, to store your login information for a website. Some cookies are for ad sites, and those are the ones you don’t necessarily want

Virus = malicious code that hides in an executable or other type of file and does something when that program is run

Worm = malicious code that spreads through the internet, sometimes through email, and sometimes by exploiting vulnerabilities in unpatched operating systems

Trojan = malicious code embedded in a file that you think is good. The term ‘trojan’ refers to the famous Trojan Horse. You are tricked into running a program named ‘Kazaa_installer.exe’ and it turns out to be a worm

Malware is short for malicious software. Malware is software designed specifically to disrupt a computer system. A trojan horse , worm or a virus could be classified as Malware. Some advertising software can be malicious in that it can try to re-install itself after you remove it.

spyware ….A form of Malware that is often associated with Browser Hijacking, Keyloggers, and recording / sending web browsing habits to a 3rd party. Spyware is one of the most common forms of malware, and often slows the performance of your computer. …

adware…A type of Advertising Display Software that delivers advertising content potentially in a manner or context that may be unexpected and unwanted by users. Many adware applications also perform tracking functions, and therefore may also be categorized as Tracking Technologies. …

virus ..A computer virus is a piece of code that is secretly introduced into a system in order to corrupt it or destroy data. Often viruses are hidden in other programs or documents and when opened, the virus is let loose.

Well, if your computer has been infected with a virus, then the virus is in your computer. I’ve never heard of a bug that causes an auto restart though.

If you have anti virus software installed on your comp, then run a full scan.

I recommend that you get a free registry fix program. There are several on cnet.com.

If I were you, I’d get “Advanced System Care Free Edition” from cnet.com, and run all the checks and fixes you can with it.

Here’s a link:

Maybe try Malwarebytes-antimalware as well:

I’ve been going to putlocker for a long time, and never had that happen. Make sure you’ve allowed your computer all the recent updates. Google “Microsoft Update”, and let it check your computer.

If you have an older computer, that could also be the problem, it could just be crashing because of the amount of memory you use when a video is playing. Advanced System Care has an option to “optimize” your computer in one click.

You probably already know this, but you might also try going to Start> Accessories> System Tools> and then use both the disk cleanup, and disk defragment options.

Again though, if it’s a “virus” as you put it, then the virus is no longer just on putlocker, it’s also in your computer. Viruses come from the web, and infect peoples computers. They don’t leave the computer until you use antivirus software to remove them. There’s lots of free antivirus software out there that’s just as good if not better than the ones that cost money.

If it’s just a “bug” in putlocker’s website, then cleaning your registry with ASC and updating your computer should fix the problem.
