I mean, not to sound OVERLY dramatic, but why is the prevailing attitude about men and suicide that it was THEIR fault that they didn’t seek help? As I mentioned in my earlier question, if suicide rates among men were to suddenly spike, would most people just assume that there was a “macho virus” going around? Would anybody other to look for an underlying cause, or would we just chalk it up to the collision of pride and cowardice?

This will be focused on Men and suicide: Who really cares of they off themselves? you may have to have resolve dilemmas itself. Eventually it will help in lots of ways; and start making your own life considerably better. Public and governmental sympathy for men’s health issues, like suicide, is very low. The only way to change that is to become a men’s health advocate. Push hard – and politicians and bureaucrats will notice.

I don’t want anyone to kill themselves. It is pointless and heartbreaking to experience the death of a loved one when it was at their own hands. You’ll always walk around wondering what they were dealing with inside and whether or not you could have stopped it.

Men as a group really need to learn to recognize the signs of major depression (research findings tell us these signs manifest differently in men than in women) – and not be ashamed to seek treatment.

The American Psychological Association has published extensively on the subject:

My dad killed his self in June 2008. how dare you. my dad was in pain and yes i wish he would have gotten help. but he didn’t. he felt alone do you know what it’s like knowing everyday that your dad was in so much pain that it drove him to suicide? the pain the anger.

I hope you never ever have to face the pain of losing someone you love to suicide. i hope you never have to feel the guilt that stays with the ones left behind.

I am NOT a professional at all nor an expert, but I LOVE psychology and sociology and am planning to get a degree in one or both soon:) I understand that you’re not asking this question to be a *****. This seems like a question I would ask.

SOOOO… In my non-professional opinion, I never realized that the prevailing attitude was like that. Seeing how our culture is, I bet you’re right, though, and it is sick. Men can’t be weak or emotional. They cannot have problems they cannot solve. They should be in control of everything that affects them. Women have their own harsh, unfair standards, but they are not the same. Women can be weak. They can show emotion, although it is normally disregarded as hormones or just “how women are.” More females commit suicide than males, but more male suicides are successful. Women don’t want to mess up their faces, so they use poisions or drugs. Men take bullets straight to the head. I can’t help but think they are wanting to “take it like a man.” Gender standards are by far the hardest on a person and the most unfair.

I would look for an underlying cause… I’m not sure what you mean by “macho virus,” but I’d think that there was some pressure from society to fit to a certain standard that these men were finding trouble filling. For instance, let’s say our society suddenly put pressure on men to fill roles as exceptional fathers (I know, I’m dreaming here). Of course, currently that is what society thinks all morally upright men should do, but there is no overwhelming pressure like their is for women to look like porn stars and super models, for example. BUT if suddenly there was an overwhelming pressure from the media, educational institutions and therefore society’s attitude for men to be exceptional fathers, and seeing that being a parent is hard enough, nonetheless an exceptional one, I’m guessing this would be too much to handle for male parents. These men would probably feel inadequate that their children don’t have the best of the best and they can’t always be there for them. They would feel like they are failing their children for not living up to a virtually unachieveable standard.

Sadly, I cannot say that everyone is like me. There may be some researchers who are concerned and do some research, but there would be nothing done about it by the media (who probably caused it in the first place) or the government. People don’t care about men’s emotional issues, because most people don’t believe they should exist. And yes, this is very, very sick.

Sooooo… with that said… you should also notice (if you will) how raising sexist issues that men have are either ignored or agreed with that it is wrong and something should be done about it, while issues with women are commonly mocked or belittled:( Nonetheless, both men’s and women’s issues need to be taken VERY seriously and we need to start now.

first of all you’re cruel! a friend of mine was teased so bad that she commited suicide! it was terrible and she was only 15. 10 years later i still miss her.
