Viruses come in a number of types, but two major classifications are DNA viruses and RNA viruses.

DNA viruses have a genome composed of a DNA strand, and RNA viruses have a genome of RNA.

Within the RNA viruses, there are also two types: “normal” RNA viruses and retroviruses.

Normal RNA viruses insert their RNA genome into a target cell, and this RNA is translated into proteins, which allow the virus to replicate.

Retroviruses insert their RNA genome into the target cell, but this RNA genome is then copied “backwards” to DNA, and this DNA is then transcribed to RNA, and then translated to proteins.

a retrovirus does not have it’s own cellular machinery to replicate and the virus must enter a host cell and hijack the host cell replication machinery to relpicate itself. it does this by inserting it’s dna into the host dna, the virus come complete with enzymes to be able to achieve this, the enzyme is a special enzyme called reverse transcriptase which converts the retrovirus’s RNA to DNA to be inserted into the host genome, the virus can live as lysogenic (with the host) or lytic (kill the host). the lytic cycle is more common, and most lysogenic cycles turn lytic after the virus has replicated many times cell lyses occurs (busts open the cell) and allows the replicated virus’s out to infect surrounding cells.

Retroviruses use reverse transcription.

Answer by Lala L

Retroviruses reverse the central dogma of biology, which states that DNA is transcribed into RNA. Through an enzyme called reverse transcriptase, retroviruses have RNA as their genetic material, and this RNA is transcribed into DNA
