Dilemma created by Yujin: How to convince parents to buy me a laptop?
four years ago by parents bought me a compaq laptop as my primary computer.My mum,dad and I all had laptops. However my laptop broke after 2 years which then my mum bought her laptop which I shared with her for a year.Which broke after a year. So for one year I have and no computer which I am not allowed to touch my Dads laptop because he says i will infect it with”viruses” surfing the web. So I had to use reside to using a my Nokia E63 for main internet use and internet cafe which i spent over 100 dollars over 1 year for gaming and information. Im 16 and whenever i ask them occasionally they tell me im will break the laptop again….laptop broke due to manufactures faulty parts. Any suggestions

Tell your parents we live in a world where computer oriented experience is a must, that you wont have a future without one, tell the it will help you learn, study, and more. Tell them you will work to pay the debt and through that you can also learn responsabilities. Ask them nicely but let them know you are serious abot the commitment.

Tell them you need it for education and college and go on youtube and find one of those need electronics and laptops for future is important. and if they said what about a desktop say whats the difference or u could tell them u can just buy a virus control thingies

If you regularly do chores and even go out of your way to do things that will help/impress them. they may be swayed or closer to getting you a new laptop. Also one way to impress them is to show responsibility with the things you already have and treat them with care. The old computer may have broken due to the manufacturer, but that’s just bad luck and it happens.
I don’t know your parents, so I can’t guarantee that this method will work, but it was worked for me.
Be aware that this method may take an extended amount of time to convince them but in the long run it will be worth it.

Well this is an interesting question, maybe you can use your Nokia E63 and do some research on viruses.
Learn about different antivirus programs, which is the best. Learn about Malware and how to avoid that. Write this all down almost like a research paper, but make it more of a proposal of what you would do to avoid breaking or infecting the laptop if they’d buy it for you.
Maybe even learn about registry cleaners and ways to make a computer running in tip top shape and show your dad ways to stay away from viruses, malware, toolbars and other programs that install when you are trying to install a secure download and you have to uncheck a box…
Also, don’t shoot for the stars – from the way you are phrasing this, your parents don’t spoil you and that’s a good thing in my opinion. You don’t need the biggest fastest greatest, and I don’t know what part of the world you are from, but after Christmas sales are a great time to get amazing deals.
But at the same time, if you are going without a computer – being 16, you pretty much have to stay some what up to date and computer literate to have a shot at getting into college if that’s what you want. Even if you don’t want to do that, being computer and information literate will help you in more aspects than I could even begin to explain in this box.
PS You can also tell your parents Compaq the cheap version of HP, they cut corners on their parts.. Plus you are 4 years older now, not that you are all knowing and wise at 16 and probably even more “curious” with your web surfing. But like I said take a look into making your internet surfing safe and research a few of the things that I mentioned and you might surprise them.

There should be no reason to keep on infecting yourself. You should learn from your mistakes. Find out about antiviruses such as Avast Free and Avira Free. Do containment with Sandboxie Free.
Well you tell them you need it for your education. Tell them sincerely that you have learned much about computer security and they may consider it.
