Adware mean :
Adware
Adware is considered a legitmate alternative offered to consumers who do not wish to pay for software. Programs, games or utilities can be designed and distributed as freeware. Sometimes freeware blocks features and functions of the software until you pay to register it. Today we have a growing number of software developers who offer their goods as “sponsored” freeware until you pay to register. Generally most or all features of the freeware are enabled but you will be viewing sponsored advertisements while the software is being used. The advertisements usually run in a small section of the software interface or as a pop-up ad box on your desktop. When you stop running the software, the ads should disappear. This allows consumers to try the software before they buy and you always have the option of disabling the ads by purchasing a registration key.
In many cases, adware is a legitimate revenue source for companies who offer their software free to users. A perfect example of this would be the popular e-mail program, Eudora. You can choose to purchase Eudora or run the software in sponsored mode. In sponsored mode Eudora will display an ad window in the program and up to three sponsored toolbar links. Eudora adware is not malicious; it reportedly doesn’t track your habits or provide information about you to a third party. This type of adware is simply serving up random paid ads within the program. When you quit the program the ads will stop running on your system.
Spyware mean:
Unfortunately, some freeware applications which contain adware do track your surfing habits in order to serve ads related to you. When the adware becomes intrusive like this, then we move it in the spyware category and it then becomes something you should avoid for privacy and security reasons. Due to its invasive nature, spyware has really given adware a bad name as many people do not know the differences between the two, or use the the terms interchangeably.
Spyware is considered a malicious program and is similar to a Trojan Horse in that users unwittingly install the product when they install something else. A common way to become a victim of spyware is to download certain peer-to-peer file swapping products that are available today.
Spyware works like adware but is usually a separate program that is installed unknowingly when you install another freeware type program or application. Once installed, the spyware monitors user activity on the Internet and transmits that information in the background to someone else. Spyware can also gather information about e-mail addresses and even passwords and credit card numbers.
Because spyware exists as independent executable programs, they have the capability to monitor your keystrokes, scan files on the hard drive, snoop other applications, such as chat programs or word processors, install other spyware programs, read cookies, change the default home page on the Web browser, while consistently relaying this information back to the spyware author who will either use it for advertising and marketing purposes or sell the information to another party.
Licensing agreements that accompany software downloads sometimes warn the user that a spyware program will be installed along with the requested software, but the licensing agreements are not always be read completely by users because the notice of a spyware installation is often couched in obtuse, hard-to-read legal disclaimers
Combating Spyware :
While one may not realize they have installed spyware, there are some signs that it exists on your computer. If you notice any changes to your Web browser that you did not make such as extra toolbars or different homepage settings, as well as changes to your security settings and favorites list, you could have spyware running on your system. Other signs of a spyware infection include pop-up ads which aren’t related to a Web site you’re viewing; usually spyware advertisements are adult content in nature and are not displayed in the same fashion as legitimate ads you would normally see on your favorite Web sites. You may also see advertisements when you’re not browsing the Web. Clicking hyperlinks which do not work (or take you somewhere you didn’t expect), a sluggish system, or your system taking longer to load the Windows desktop are all signs that your computer may be infected with spyware.
With the onset of spyware comes a plethora of anti-spyware software packages to rid your system of these unwanted and malicious programs. Anti-spyware software works by identifying any spyware installed on your system and removing it. Since spyware is installed like any other application on your system it will leave traces of itself in the system registry and in other places on your computer. Anti-spyware software will look for evidence of these files and delete them if found.
It is important to remember that not all companies who claim their software contains adware are really offering adware. There is always a chance that adware is spyware in disguise so to speak, and that programs with embedded spyware may not state its existence at all. Always stay on the side of caution and be sure to research privacy policies and licensing agreements that come with freeware. You should also become familiar with Internet lists of companies reported to be using spyware. Much like a firewall or anti-virus program, anti-spyware software is crucial to maintain optimal protection and security on your computer and network
Spyware = any program that spies on you or your computer and reports back to a server.
Malware = any program that you don’t want on your computer that was put there without your intention (viruses, worms, spyware, trojans, etc.)
Adware = any program designed to give you ads, pop up or otherwise
Cookies = a small text file that your browser puts on your computer when you visit some sites. They are usually harmless and are used, for example, to store your login information for a website. Some cookies are for ad sites, and those are the ones you don’t necessarily want
Virus = malicious code that hides in an executable or other type of file and does something when that program is run
Worm = malicious code that spreads through the internet, sometimes through email, and sometimes by exploiting vulnerabilities in unpatched operating systems
Trojan = malicious code embedded in a file that you think is good. The term ‘trojan’ refers to the famous Trojan Horse. You are tricked into running a program named ‘Kazaa_installer.exe’ and it turns out to be a worm
Answer by krishna kumar Malware is short for malicious software. Malware is software designed specifically to disrupt a computer system. A trojan horse , worm or a virus could be classified as Malware. Some advertising software can be malicious in that it can try to re-install itself after you remove it.
spyware ….A form of Malware that is often associated with Browser Hijacking, Keyloggers, and recording / sending web browsing habits to a 3rd party. Spyware is one of the most common forms of malware, and often slows the performance of your computer. …
adware…A type of Advertising Display Software that delivers advertising content potentially in a manner or context that may be unexpected and unwanted by users. Many adware applications also perform tracking functions, and therefore may also be categorized as Tracking Technologies. …

A computer virus is a computer program that can copy itself and infect a computer. The term “virus” is also commonly but erroneously used to refer to other types of malware, including but not limited to adware and spyware programs that do not have the reproductive ability.
A true virus can spread from one computer to another (in some form of executable code) when its host is taken to the target computer; for instance because a user sent it over a network or the Internet, or carried it on a removable medium such as a floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB drive.
Answer by Danny G Malware, short for malicious software, is software designed to secretly access a computer system without the owner’s informed consent. The expression is a general term used by computer professionals to mean a variety of forms of hostile, intrusive, or annoying software or program code.
Software is considered to be Malware based on the perceived intent of the creator rather than any particular features. Malware includes computer viruses, worms, trojan horses, spyware, dishonest adware, scareware, crimeware, most rootkits, and other malicious and unwanted software or program. In law, malware is sometimes known as a computer contaminant, for instance in the legal codes of several U. S. states, including California and West Virginia.
Malware is not the same as defective software, that is, software that has a legitimate purpose but contains harmful bugs. Sometimes, malware is disguised as genuine software, and may come from an official site. Therefore, some security programs, such as McAfee may call malware “potentially unwanted programs” or “PUP”. Though a computer virus is malware that can reproduce itself, the term is often used erroneously to refer to the entire category. Malware is sometimes called scumware.
On the other hand Antivirus/ Virus is
A computer virus is a computer program that can copy itself[1] and infect a computer.
Viruses can increase their chances of spreading to other computers by infecting files on a network file system or a file system that is accessed by another computer.
As stated above, the term “computer virus” is sometimes used as a catch-all phrase to include all types of malware, even those that do not have the reproductive ability. Malware includes computer viruses, computer worms, Trojan horses, most rootkits, spyware, dishonest adware and other malicious and unwanted software, including true viruses. Viruses are sometimes confused with worms and Trojan horses, which are technically different. A worm can exploit security vulnerabilities to spread itself automatically to other computers through networks, while a Trojan horse is a program that appears harmless but hides malicious functions. Worms and Trojan horses, like viruses, may harm a computer system’s data or performance. Some viruses and other malware have symptoms noticeable to the computer user, but many are surreptitious or simply do nothing to call attention to themselves. Some viruses do nothing beyond reproducing themselves.
So a good antivirus is any one that you’ve tested and you find acceptable and efficient at detecting threats like Avast

Answer by jon sometimes if you create a new folder and you set that folder in a application then it wont go away. i will give you an example. i create a new folder in my documents and put my fav mp3 tracks in there. i then goto windows media player settings and put that folder as a default so windows picks it up easier so i can burn to cd. when cd done, i have finished with that folder and delete it in my documents. later that folder has come back and keeps coming back until you stop using that folder as a default folder like i did in windows. i hope this helps
Answer by thedeath Download and install a good antivirus software.
Boot your computer in safe-mode. To do this press F8 key repeatedly when you start your computer. A screen will display several options to go into. Choose Safe mode.
When in safe mode scan your computer with the antivirus.
Safe-mode does not load all drivers etc. onto the system when loaded. Hence there is a high chance that you are able to perform scans, uninstalls properly if having problems in normal windows.
Answer by VIKD I suggest that you try to carryout system restore to a day previous to the day when there was no virus or any problems. It may be a few weeks or months back. You have to decide the date. Detailed instructions are posted at http://fixit.in/systemrestore.html
The problem is likely to be solved. Then,You insatll a standard antivirus soft ware such as Norton, AVG , Avast ( free antivirus software and Ad-aware, Ewido ( free spyware removers). You can download free softwares at

Answer by King that is a little bit strange, as norton has been used to remove this in the past, my suggestion is that you may not have logged in as admin when you did this, this will normally not matter, but it may well require that you manually delete command.exe
i suggest you update your antivirus and then try again,
if you are still getting pop ups then it means you do not have any pop up blocker and anti spyware installed at the moment.
update you norton antivirus, if you run the scan and it tells you where the antivirus is located, you can open dos propmt

Answer by JTB Try a online antivirus scanner and a online anti-adware/malware/spyware scanner in safe mode with network to clean up your computer BEFORE you download anything. This becouce the program you download can get infectet.
To reformat you computer and reinstall is the last option.
Disable “System Restore” for Windows Me and XP, then restart your PC to clean your system restore points for viruses, spyware, adware etc.
To get in safe mode Press “F8″ upon bootup.
Select “Safe mode with Networking”.
Go to Start – Run – type iexplore http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html Enter(ok).
Do a full system scan. If something is found, delete it, reboot and do the same again in safe mode with network.
When that scan does not find anything you reboot again in safe mode with network.
Go to Start – Run – type iexplore http://www.ewido.net/en/ Enter(ok).
Do a full system scan. If something is found, delete it, reboot and do the same again in safe mode with network.
**NOTE: Do NOT do anything else with your computer when scanning. This because you can start virus/adware/spyware/malware manually.
When no one of these scanners are showing anything you can reboot back to normal mode.
You need to get one antivirus program, one firewall and some spyware/adware/malware removers if you don’t have it.
I use Norton Internet Security (antivirus, spyware, firewall, add blocker, mail spamfilter, pop up blocker etc) Ad Aware, Spybot and more on my desktop running XP Home SP2 with Firefox and Yahoo Toolbar with pop up blocker.
On my laptop i have Ubuntu 7.04. No security needed in Linux, but i use antivirus and firewall. Firefox is standard.
I have no virus, spyware, adware, pop up etc on my computers.
Mozilla Firefox and Opera are safer browsers to use.

Spybot – Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven’t intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been “hijacked” (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don’t see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there’s no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

Answer by dandspach Download this free anti-virus program…http://www.grisoft.com/doc/1
Answer by Doc8 If you know the idenity of the virus, Symantec and probably other manufacturers have under support a list of viruses and a program to download for its removal.
Answer by Charlie C 1 Do you know the virus, if so then just do a search for a removal tool off the net.
2. If you do not know what virus it is then you may have to load a antivirus program and hope it picks up the virus and gets rid of it.
3. back up your computer and format the harddrive then just do a fresh load. that way you know for sure the virus is gone. once you get everything loaded back up. scan your backed up data for a virus and delete out the files that are bad.
good luck though
Answer by panalwayscute If the anti-virus program doesn’t help, you should clean out your computer completely. That is Format C:, then download all the software again. In future, always backup your information!
Note : If you don’t format, the virus may have done some damage to some of your programs and you will realize that some won’t work properly.
Answer by bloody_yangster virus is very tough to get rid of. i had virus and the only thing i did was take it to Best Buy and had them to delete all the files. then i had to reprogram the computer with the cd’s that came with the computer (u still have it, rite?). it gonna cost u about $ 200 to have the files deleted because the computer geeks have to restore all the things that the virus has done also. after that u can go buy an Anti-Virus program that will prevent u from getting virus again.
oh yeah….no point in trying to get rid of your virus with Anti-Virus. it only tells u when virus are in your computer and before they attack so u can delete them. once they’ve attacked your files, to the shop goes your computer.
Answer by dutchtown4life basically,
literally wipe your computer system
erase everything and if that doesn’twork take it to the place you bought it from and hopefully they can fix it

First, you need anti-virus software – download, install and update AVG anti-virus (it’s free for personal use) – you can find it here – http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1
Then remove your System Restore points (viruses love to hide in the System Restore files), but be aware that if you do remove your existing Restore Points you will not be able to “roll back” your computer to a previous configuration. To find out how to disable System Restore see this page – http://www.pchell.com/virus/systemrestore.shtml
Just to be sure you don’t have other malware on your computer I recommend that you download SpyBot Search & Destroy and Adware – both are free spyware/adware detection and removal software.
Next, start the computer in Safe Mode – (as the comptuer is starting up, keep tapping the F8 key on your keyboard until you see a special start-up menu) – more on how to start in Safe Mode here – http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/boot_failsafe.mspx?mfr=true
Using AVG – run a full system virus scan while in Safe Mode
After the viruses have been detected and removed, run SpyBot and AdAware (full system scans) then restart the comptuer, enable System Restore again and enjoy a virus-free computing experience.
If the problems are still there, try using MSCONFIG to help figure out how to manually disable the Trojan from starting up – see more about MSCONFIG here – http://netsquirrel.com/msconfig/
To help protect against malware you should install a firewall, Zone Alarm works perfectly well and is free – http://www.zonealarm.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp
Also, don’t forget to keep Windows up-to-date – using Microsoft Windows Update!
After following these instructions go to: http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/Must-Read-Before-Posting-Hijackthis-Log-t2852.html they will help you for free, no credit card or personal information needed, and they will analyze Hijack This logs for you, to make sure that your computer is safe. HijackThis helps If persistent spyware is bogging down your computer, you might need HijackThis. The tiny program examines vulnerable or suspect parts of your system, such as browser helper objects and certain types of Registry keys. Pressing the Scan button generates a log of dozens of items, most of which are just customizations. Don’t check off an item and hit the Fix checked button unless you’re sure it’s malware. Clicking Info on selected item tells you why the entry was flagged as suspicious, but not whether it’s actually malware. To find that out, search the Web for that item’s name or go straight to a forum, such as SpywareInfo or Computer Cops. Saving the log creates a text document you can post to these forums.
The latest version adds powerful tools to the Config window. The process manager and hosts file editor help you excise virulent infections. The unique ADS Spy tool scans for alternate data streams, which some browser hijackers use to hide from spyware removers. The program still installs into whatever directory in which you unzip the file, which can make it hard to locate. HijackThis is a serious tool for any user who needs to root out a serious infestation, but wield it with caution. So, go to the site I gave you above, and they’ll help you step by step.
Free registry cleaners:
CCleaner does not specialise in cleaning the registry, it’s mostly used to speed up your computer by cleaning up your recycle bin, temp files/internet files, browsing history, application errors, log files and so on.. which frees up some space in your harddisk
I’ve tried these 10 free cleaners
http://www.regsofts.com/freeware/freereg…
I would recommend the following(click on the webpage and follow):
Free Windows Registry Repair(first one) – rather effective, the first scan i did after about a year showed over 500 problems with the registry, fixed them all
RegSeeker(2nd one) – fixed another 300 problems after using the previous one.
and like the two of them said, Eusing Free Registry Cleaner and Abexo Free Registry Cleaner(30 day trial)
Just run them all that’ll fix most problems! But dont expect 100% fixes because programs might recreate registry entries when used and so a second scan might still show the same few errors. (ignore such errors)

Uncertainty caused by Chris w: How to Remove “google redirect virus ?” ?

Answer by David W Malwarebytes CAN do it but you have to boot into safe mode and install it from a thumb drive or dvd.
Once it’s installed in safe mode it will run fine and remove google redirect..
Answer by Bill What’s affecting your computer right now is what they call the “google redirect virus”. It’s not a virus actually but a rootkit which usually comes bundled with some spyware infections. It’s beyond the removal capabilities of antispyware programs. You need a different tool to get rid of it. Run this one:
Answer by Leon Try scanning your computer with Malwarebytes. Try this:
1. You’ll need Malwarebytes, so if you haven’t already, download Malwarebytes from http://bleepingvirus.com/goto/malwarebytes or http://malwarebytes.org (either one will work)
2. Restart your computer. When your computer starts up, after the BIOS/logo screen, press [F8] and choose “SAFE MODE with Networking” (*very important!*). Install Malwarebytes on your computer. Now update Malwarebytes.
3. Open Malwarebytes and do a **FULL SCAN** (you must do a FULL SCAN) from Malwarebytes and wait for it to finish. This will take some time to complete so be patient. A Full Scan will scan more files and pick up more things than a “quick scan”.
4. Remove/delete all the nasties it found then reboot your computer again in *SAFE MODE*.
5. Run a “FULL SCAN” again from Malwarebytes in case there are more infected files that didn’t show up the first time as generally deleting the first lot of infected files ‘unhides’ more files which are infected.
Let me know how you get on and whether this helps.
