Answer by traciatim

Leave your machine unconnected to a public network and only intsall software from trusted sources (IE original discs from known manufacturers.) and you probably don’t need one.

I don’t use a memory resident scanner on my own machine, I find they slow down the machine too much. What I do is have a weekly scan, I keep my data on a separate physical drive, and each week after my scan if it’s clean I make an image of my boot/application drive. If I ever catch anything, I just roll back and reinstall anything I installed in the past week.

Answer by kooldude

Put on windows firewall in the security center in my computer.

Answer by Subhendu S

If you have viruses in your computer, you have to have anti-viruses to clean it. If you don’t want to get your computer infected by viruses, then first clean your computer with an anti-virus and remove floppy/cd drives, disconnect from internet and network. Viruses do not touch lone computers.

You may also download some free anti-viruses if you don’t want to buy. Get AVG from http://free.grisoft.com. You may also try free online virus scan from http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

Still if it doesn’t solve your problem, you need to study each and every virus signature and know to program how to remove those signatures from a file.

Answer by Dell tech

You can do a free online scan to get rid of the viruses or get a free anti virus software

Do an online virus scan to check if you still have viruses on your computer. And let us know if the online virus scan still finds any virus or spyware .

Be careful of what you download onto your machine, do not use P2P software such as Limewire or BearShare, do not open emails with attachments unless you are aware that the emails are from valid sources and that the attachments were sent by that person.

I have not used an AV product on my laptop since I got it 2 years ago and have never had an infection. I perform a virus scan about once every 6 months from an online source (BitDefender) and scan my system for spyware at the same time with HiJackThis and have not had a problem. And yes I do use my laptop at work connecting to various networks and scanning the networks for infections.

Start your PC in safe mode with networking by hitting F8 while your computer is booting (start tapping it before Windows starts to load to get the boot options menu). Then go and download Malwarebytes (http://www.malwarebytes.org/ , you might have to download it on another computer and put it on a flashdrive if the site was blocked by the malware, and rename the file to prevent that from being blocked as well), and install, update, and run it. Then remove what it finds and restart your computer.

Answer by optimus

A scan with software like Malwarebytes’ anti-malware should kill it, especially if it’s not running anymore. (Junk like that is known for keeping you from running anti-virus and anti-spyware software).

If you have antivirus+antispyware software like Avast Antivirus, run a scan for it too. Norton probably won’t cut it, and Avast is free. (Just be careful to run only one antivirus program at a time, otherwise you’ll have more problems than solutions.)

If you can’t get online you might have to try safe mode with networking.

You will need to turn off your computer. You will need to start tapping the f8 button and then turn on your computer and keeping tapping f8 until you get to an advanced boot options menu. Then use your arrows to select safe mode with networking. Then log into admin and try again.

If it doesn’t let you get into safe mode or let you online you will need to go to a different computer and save that program to a flash drive and then try to install it that way.

Then to prevent you from getting these viruses again download and run this free program where you can run everything in a virtual environment. Then even if you go to a bad site or download a bad file it wont matter because it will be trapped in the sandbox and it wont be able to affect your real computer.

Just to be safe…

The key words here are SAFE MODE!!!

Download, (if you can’t get on-line, have a friend download and copy to disc/flash for transfer) install, update and then, in SAFE MODE* run full scans, with these programs…

http://www.superantispyware.com

http://download.cnet.com/1770-20_4-0.html?query=Ad+Aware+Free+Anti+Malware&tag=404&searchtype=downloads Ad-Aware free

*** Important, when downloaded/installed/updated disconnect from the internet ***

Then re-start.

If you can’t run a scan, go into the scanner’s folder and re-name the .exe file to something like ‘MyFile.exe’ and try in safe mode again. Some malware prevent the execution of anti spy/mal/virus scans by blocking them by name.

You should consider getting a good Anti-Virus program.

Try one of these free ones…

http://www.free-av.com/en/download/1/avira_antivir_personal__free_antivirus.html (Avria)

http://free.avg.com/download

***Never use more than one, active, anti-virus program at any one time***

*Note: On start up (before Windows loads) keep tapping either F5 or F8 (be aware that some manufacturers use F8 for system recovery!) then use arrow keys to highlight ‘Safe Mode with networking’ and hit Enter/Return, click on a user account, enter the Administrator password (if you don’t know it, there probably isn’t one so leave it blank) and hit Enter/Return.

** It has been noted that Malwarebytes should be run in ‘Normal Mode’ unless that isn’t possible!

You should start by not surfing porn sites. If you absolutely must surf pornographic material, though, buy and active anti-spyware scanner.

A good one to use can be found at: http://www.google.com/search?q=superantispyware (yes that’s a real product.) Download it, install it, & run it.

Answer by dick_bee_bad

There are melware detector type of apps that will filter your web pages as they are brought in. Do you even have AV? do you have a melware scanner? These are are apps I would install.

Run this : Use the instructions of how to use it.

Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware :

http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

Scroll down and click Download free version. Don’t have to buy it.

How to use Malwarebytes after it is installed:

1. Open Malwarebytes > Click on the Update Tab across the top> get the latest updates.

2. On the Scanner tab, make sure thePerform full scan option is selected and then click on theScan button to start scanning your computer

3. MBAM will now start scanning your computer for malware. This process can take quite a while.

4. When the scan is finished a message box will appear

5. You should click on the OK button to close the message box and continue with the Malwareremoval process.

6. You will now be back at the main Scanner screen. At this point you should click on theShow Results button.

7. A screen displaying all the malware that the program found will be shown

8. You should now click on the Remove Selected button to remove all the listed malware. MBAM will now delete all of the files and registry keys and add them to the programs quarantine. When removing the files, MBAM may require a reboot in order to remove some of them. If it displays a message stating that it needs to reboot, please allow it to do so. Once your computer has rebooted, and you are logged in, please continue with the rest of the steps.

9. When MBAM has finished removing the malware, it will open the scan log and display it in Notepad. Review the log as desired, and then close the Notepad window.

10. You can now exit the MBAM program.

Answer by The Phlebob

That’s known as scareware. There are never any guarantees in malware fighting, but here’s my best shot at a generic removal procedure:

First, boot into Safe Mode With Networking. (See below for details.) That sometimes keeps malware from protecting itself. Then, if you have an anti-virus, make sure it has the latest virus definitions and run a full scan with it. If you don’t have one, many people here swear by Malwarebytes (it’s free).

I suggest you also download Ad-Aware Free and Spybot S&D (they’re free), install them, update them and run full scans with them in Safe Mode With Networking.

Also, turn off System Restore to evict any copies of bad stuff that might be lurking there.

To get into Safe Mode with Networking:

1.Log out and reboot your machine.

2.When the machine starts the reboot sequence, press the F8 key repeatedly.

3.Select Safe Mode with Networking from the resulting menu.

4.Login. If the malware has changed your password, try logging in as Administrator. By default, Administrator has no password.

5.The machine will continue booting, but the Windows desktop will look different.

6.When you’re finished doing what you need to do, log out and reboot back into normal mode.

Another trick that may enable anti-malware and/or its installer program to sneak past the malware is to change the name of the anti-malware program itself. The names of the files and their locations differ between anti-malware programs, but the procedure is always the same:

1.In Windows Explorer, find the folder with the anti-malware.

2.Change the name of the program (it always ends with a .exe) to virtually anything else, but keep the “.exe” part.

3.Run that.

Note that even if the anti-malware programs get rid of the malware, they may not be able to reverse the effects. Search the Web for possible fixes.

Update and run full scans regularly, not just when you think you already have malware.

Good luck.

Note: There ARE free versions of these reputable programs on the websites listed. They just may not be obvious.

Ad-Aware Free (free): http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

Spybot S & D (free): http://www.spybot.com/

MalwareBytes (free) http://www.malwarebytes.org/ (If the program doesn’t run, changing its filename from mbam.exe to something else ending in .exe has sometimes proven effective.)

AVG anti-virus (free): http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5/

Avast! (free): http://www.avast.com/

Kaspersky (free trial) (Seems to dislike installing on any machine with just about any other decent anti-malware, including some firewalls.): http://usa.kaspersky.com/downloads/

Answer by Mr. Bean

Hi there,

Scan your system with Kaspersky antivirus and system cleaner Reginout. I hope your problem would be solved. If not yet, follow these steps:

Step 1. Download a pop-up killer. A pop-up killer is a tool that runs in the background on your computer catching the pop-up windows automatically. This is the first step to get rid of all pop-up windows, mainly because it is easy to install and run a pop-up killer nowadays and most pop-up blockers does not need any configuration at all.

We recommend Stop-the-Pop-Up, which is free and compatible with most browsers, such as Internet Explorer, Netscape, Opera, Mozilla, SBC Yahoo and NetCaptor.

Step 2. Scan your computer for adware and spyware. If the pop-up killer did not solve the pop-up problem completely you might want to scan your computer for adware and spyware. This dubious type of software usually monitors your internet activity to open pop-up ads that fit your preferences. They spy on you, pure and simple. GAIN and SaveNow are two notorious adware applications that open pop-up windows.

We recommend that you scan your computer with Bazooka Adware and Spyware Scanner which seems to be frequently updated. SpyBot is also a great spyware scanner.

Step 3. Drop Internet Explorer. Join Mozilla and Opera. Mozilla is an open-source browser developed by a community of developers. Netscape Corporation initiated the project was in 1998. The Mozilla browser is available for free and has a built-in popup blocker.

Another browser well worth mentioning is the Norwegian flagship Opera which impress with its speed and has a pop-up stopper feature. As Mozilla, Opera is also available for free. The only drawback with the Opera browser is that it displays banner ads in its user interface. Try one of these browsers if you don’t want to install a pop-up killer.

Step 4. Disable the Messenger service. Recently a new type of pop-up windows started to litter users’ desktops. Spammers found out they could launch pop-up windows at the user desktop even when the user was not surfing the web. The spammers take advantage of a bug in the Microsoft Windows Operating system, which allows them to open pop-ups window with knowledge of the IP number only. Do not despair; you can stop the Messenger Service pop-ups too.

Step 5. Make friends with the HOST file and block the ad servers. It is possible to block pop-ups and banner ads by editing the host file.

You should try using MSCONFIG in Windows XP to disable some of the unnecessary programs that automatically load on start-up. Disabling these programs will help your computer boot faster and crash less.

1. In Windows XP, go to Start > Run

2. Type MSCONFIG in the “Open:” box and then either press enter on your keyboard or click on the OK button.

3. This launches Microsoft’s System Configuration Utility. Click on the Startup tab (the tab at the far right).

4. This takes you to a page with a list of “startup items.” Startup items are programs that are automatically loaded every time you turn on your computer. Some startup programs are absolutely necessary, others are simply a waste of RAM.

Remember, disable only those programs that you recognize and don’t need to have running all the time. When in doubt, leave it on.

5. Click on the OK button.

6. A message will pop up telling you that you must restart your computer before these changes will take effect. Click on “Yes” and your computer will automatically reboot.

7. That’s it! Your computer should now boot faster and crash less.

And you should also update our Antivirus software and run a virus scan,

You need a good anti-malware/anti-spyware program There are a couple I could recommend but it would be better for you to do a web search as you would have no way of telling whether the recommendations I or anyone else makes are genuine or malware themselves. This is one case where “google it yourself” is sound advice!

You obviously have limited access to the web so,

You have downloaded malware to your machine, it can happen to the most diligent user.

DON’T pay for the download products they never work but it does what it’s designed to do, i.e. Get your account details so they can clear your card or bank account.

If you want a challenge you can get rid of these but it take a fair bit of research and can get very time consuming. For example when trying to run a malware scan you will have to ensure that the malware does not infect the malware scanner (which happened to me).

If you want your machine back and working quickly it will be a lot quicker to reinstall your operating system, you may be able to rescue photos etc., but it’s essential that you scan them before reloading them.

If going for a reinstall, make sure your bios will allow you to boot from a cdrom/dvd drive then format your hard drive when prompted by the installation disc. If you aren’t offered the option try a straight install.

1. Reboot into safe mode with networking. If it does not work, continue anyway

2 .Open Internet Explorer, choose Tools menu and select Internet Options.

3. Click on the Connections tab and then on the LAN Settings button. Uncheck the checkbox labeled Use a proxy server for your LAN under the Proxy Server section and press OK.

4. Then start task manager or process explorer (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx ) and stop all processes that are like combination of random letters. If it fails, continue anyway, or check this guide : http://www.2-viruses.com/remove-anti-virus for more specific names

5. Start MSConfig and disable all startup entries that launch processes from within your user directory, for example App Data folder… You might need to reboot after this step, to safe mode with networking again.

6. Download good anti-malware tool like spyware doctor or malwarebytes. Scan with it, and delete stuff it finds (if it wont remove it itself).

7. Reboot.

you need to reset the file association for .exe to default, you can download a fix that will do that. They give instructions,,,to unzip, right click on what you downloaded and select extract, choose desktop for where to extract to
