The Avira full system scan is taking way too long and I really must shut my computer down. At the moment, it has 3 virus “detections” and 6 “warnings”. If I stop the scan now (currently at 55% and has taken 8 hours!) what happens to those detections/warnings? Are they clear out of the way now? Or will stopping the scan mean Avira does nothing with those detections?

I don’t know. When you stop the scan, Avira may give you the option to remove the infections it’s already detected. Eight hours sounds much too long a scan time, even with a large hard disk and multiple folders/files.

Try this:

Firstly, boot your computer to the Safe Mode menu screen. You do this by repeatedly pressing F8 as soon as you boot up. Once there, use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode with Networking. Continue to boot from there, by pressing Enter. You will now see some drivers being loaded. There will be a pause at some point. This usually lasts for no more than 30 seconds.

If that’s successful, download and run TDSSKiller.exe from Kaspersky Lab. It’s tiny, and takes just a minute to run. It hunts down and kills a specific family of rootkits:

Regardless of the results, download the free version of Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware (MBAM). Install it, get updates and run a full scan (still in Safe Mode). This is a direct download link. Copy and paste it into your browser’s address bar, and press Enter.

After that, boot normally and run another full scan with MBAM. It will detect any malware that wasn’t running in Safe Mode.

If the problem still exists, download and run the free Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool:

You should now delete TDSSKiller.exe and the Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool, as updated versions are often made available. Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware can be easily uninstalled, should you wish to do so, but it may prove to be beneficial in the future.

Look for the program in the program files and delete it. If you can’t find it, then all I can say is that you just need a better anti-malware…

kaspersky or webroot. I was recomended to both of those, i used webroots 30 day free trial and kasperskys 30 day trial. Now i just have to decide which one is better, because they are both the best. They warned me of harmfull links before clicking them, and they picked up spyware and malware that was never detected with other anti virus programs ect. also, kaspersky has a virtual keyboard so if your on any site and need to type in personal info, you type it in kasperskys virtual keyboard.

go to safety.live.com for an online scan that will most likely erase the fake virus software. The time takes a while but the results will pay off.

AVG doesn’t makes your computer slow though its not even worth having it on your system. It wont be able to remove most of the harmful trojans, detect some not so common keyloggers and its firewall sucks big time as well.

Better go for malwarebytes if in case you’re looking for a free AV and for the firewall go with comodo internet security and you’ll be alright.

The new one (9.0) came out. It has speed, but..not exactly the “etiquette.” CNET reviewed it and found that it DOES get the job done, but its detection rate isn’t as good as others.

Right now AVG Free is better.

Right now the newest version of AVG is 9.0, I don’t know how fast it runs, though.

However, one antivirus software alone (even with spyware protection) will not fully protect you from internet threats.

It is best to use a combination of security software.

Apart from antivirus, you need an antispyware, although some antivirus software has already included spyware detection and removal, it cannot completely detect everything.

You need at least one standalone antispyware program, a Host Intrusion prevention program, and a browser protection utility (even if you are using internet explorer 8).

Leave your machine unconnected to a public network and only intsall software from trusted sources (IE original discs from known manufacturers.) and you probably don’t need one.

I don’t use a memory resident scanner on my own machine, I find they slow down the machine too much. What I do is have a weekly scan, I keep my data on a separate physical drive, and each week after my scan if it’s clean I make an image of my boot/application drive. If I ever catch anything, I just roll back and reinstall anything I installed in the past week.

If you have viruses in your computer, you have to have anti-viruses to clean it. If you don’t want to get your computer infected by viruses, then first clean your computer with an anti-virus and remove floppy/cd drives, disconnect from internet and network. Viruses do not touch lone computers.

Be careful of what you download onto your machine, do not use P2P software such as Limewire or BearShare, do not open emails with attachments unless you are aware that the emails are from valid sources and that the attachments were sent by that person.

I have not used an AV product on my laptop since I got it 2 years ago and have never had an infection. I perform a virus scan about once every 6 months from an online source (BitDefender) and scan my system for spyware at the same time with HiJackThis and have not had a problem. And yes I do use my laptop at work connecting to various networks and scanning the networks for infections.
